Trying to Find a Balance

February 18th, 2010

I can actually sum up the key to my happiness in one word: balance. I love my job. I love working on Web Sites, coming up with ideas, designing, see my stuff and hearing what people think. I also really love drinking whiskey, swimming, board games, and riding my bike. The point is, I don’t want to do any of those things all the time. For the past three years my entire life has been totally taken over with by a place called Crispin Porter + Bogusky; I had no balance in my life.

Working at CP+B meant that I was doing just that: working. Don’t’ get me wrong, I did a ton of work there that I’m extremely proud of, worked with amazingly talented people, learned more in 4 months there than in 4 years of school, and made some of the best friends I’ve ever had. But Crispin demands that work is not only the most important thing in your life, but pretty much the only important thing in your life. There was a lack of that magic word: balance.

I recently accepted a position at Sterling-Rice Group, still right at home here in good ol’ Boulder, CO. The work is great. The people are great. I’ll occasionally work a late night or weekend, but that’s now the exception, not the rule. And get this, I can pretty much anticipate when those nights/weekends are coming. What does that mean? I can plan trips. I can buy concert tickets. I can make dinner plans and show up on time. It’s all about balance.

Balance isn’t only for work life though. Think diet (you can’t eat sweets all the time, but you’re also a much happier person if you bite into a god damned cupcake every now and then), think friends and family, think TV and reading. Think of anything in your life and think about how much better it is when you’ve found a balance.

And that, dear friends, is my theory on the key to happiness. Guess what? I’m pretty god damned happy right now.

Hittin’ the Books

Wolverine
WEAPON X ::

I’ve been working out at Erin’s gym every now and then. Some kind soul left the above comic book (Wolverine • Deadpool: Weapon X) resting snugly on the oddly placed gym fireplace. It’s old and tattered which really only adds to the joy I feel hopping on the workout bike and losing myself into its wrinkled pages. It’s not a particularly good X-Men book, but it is certainly enough to give me that comic book itch that I’ve gone without for the last few months.

By some huge coincidence, my buddy K.Roy sent me this great article on The 20 Best Graphic Novels of the Decade. Some of them I’ve read, but there’s a few on here that require my attention. I’m leaning towards the Superman fights commies one at the moment, but could easily be swayed.

Wanderer
STERLING ::

Reading the blog post by my friend, Alexander, today reminded me of this fantastic quote by Sterling Hayden that K.Roy sent me a while back:

To be truly challenging, a voyage, like a life, must rest on a firm foundation of financial unrest. Otherwise, you are doomed to a routine traverse, the kind known to yachtsmen who play with their boats at sea… “cruising” it is called. Voyaging belongs to seamen, and to the wanderers of the world who cannot, or will not, fit in. If you are contemplating a voyage and you have the means, abandon the venture until your fortunes change. Only then will you know what the sea is all about.

“I’ve always wanted to sail to the south seas, but I can’t afford it.” What these men can’t afford is not to go. They are enmeshed in the cancerous discipline of “security.” And in the worship of security we fling our lives beneath the wheels of routine - and before we know it our lives are gone.

What does a man need - really need? A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter, six feet to lie down in - and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment. That’s all - in the material sense, and we know it. But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry, playthings that divert our attention for the sheer idiocy of the charade.

The years thunder by, The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before we know it, the tomb is sealed.

Where, then, lies the answer? In choice. Which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life?

Welcome, Winter
WELCOME, WINTER ::

My feet are twitching. I’m sweating a little bit. I can’t wait to get back up to the mountains. I’ve gone a couple times this year already, but ice and snow are two different things and I’m ready for the fresh white stuff. I’ve already had a stern talkin’-to with my body, and it’s ready for the abuse of ramps and rails.

Aside from the large amount of random weekend boarding I plan on doing the next couple of weeks, there is, of course, The New Year’s Eve Kasia Kabin Blowout. Don’t worry, I won’t forget to pack the shot-ski.

A couple of days ago M’lady and I watched Home Alone (my favorite X-Mas movie), drank sangria, and allowed ourselves to be engrossed in the holiday spirit. Can’t wait to see you, family.
